Sobieszewo Island – a seaside district of Gdańsk, located only 15 km from the Gdańsk Old Town, located at the mouth of the Vistula. A place with the status of an ecological island with two ornithological reserves “Ptasi Raj” and “Mewia Łacha”, where you can meet about 300 species of birds, rare plant species and gray seals. This is a place that also has many other tourist attractions, such as: the Kazimierz Water Tower, the historic lock in Przegalina, Forsterówka – a larch house in Orle and the Wincenty Pol Memorial Room. However, the island’s greatest advantage is its beautiful sandy beach, relatively empty compared to other seaside resorts.
Birds’ Paradise
The “Birds’ Paradise” nature reserve with an area of 188 ha is located in the north-western part of Sobieszewska Island. It was founded in 1959. It includes two coastal lakes (Lake Karaś and Lake Ptasi Raj). The lakes are surrounded by a wide strip of reeds, and the former seaside meadows are covered with alder trees. We invite you to the real nature and educational path created in 2002. Its route runs through the “Birds’ Paradise” nature reserve, which occupies the western part of Sobieszewo Island. The entire path is approximately 6 km long and the journey may take up to 4 hours. In order to make exploring easier for tourists, the path is marked with orange ducks in the trees.
Lake Karaś
We are on the edge of a disappearing lake, which owes its name to one of the fish species found here. At the beginning of the 20th century, it had a connection with the lake. Bird Paradise. Currently, its banks are overgrown with reed beds. The surface of Lake Karaś comes alive mainly in spring and autumn during bird migrations. We can then observe flocks of ducks from the observation tower. In summer, however, there are: mallards, coots, teals, great crested grebes and gray herons, and recently also non-breeding white herons. We return to our route.
“Mewia Łacha” Reserve
Green areas, beaches, birds and even seals! The Vistula, the largest wild river in Europe, ends its course flowing into the Bay of Gdańsk east of Gdańsk. In this beautiful place, the “Mewia Łacha” nature reserve was established in 1991. Its aim is to protect the unique breeding and resting place of migratory and wintering birds on a European scale, as well as the unique landscape of the Vistula estuary on our coast. As a result, the mouth of the Vistula River has become one of the most interesting places on the bird map. Gray seals also regularly occur here, and sometimes even rarer species: common and ringed seals. This pearl of the Polish coast is an example of how man and nature can coexist thanks to each other.
Hiking trail
Gdańsk Górki Wschodnie – Gdańsk Świbno – green colour – length 14 km. A very short trail running entirely within the city of Gdańsk, in its easternmost part. This is an area located between Wisła Martwa, Śmiała and Przekop, called Sobieszewo Island. The trail practically traverses the entire island, starting from Wisła Śmiała to Przekop, i.e. from Górki Wschodnie to Świbno. The most interesting is Sobieszewo with the Wincenty Pol Memorial Hall, which has been operating for years. Above all, however, the trail traverses a large forest complex covering the local dunes and spit. The trail is close to two nature reserves established on the island, protecting primarily birds: Ptasi Raj – Birds’ Paradise (nature and educational trail) – partly a shared route – and Mewia Łacha (marked access from the trail). On a short section, the trail leads along the bank of Martwa Wisła, and on an even shorter section – along the bank of Przekop. In the middle of the route, in Orlinki, close to the trail (marked access), you can visit the Kazimierz water reservoir and an observation tower.
Kazimierz Reservoir
The Kazimierz Water Reservoir is an example of a modern water tower that combines technical, cognitive and educational functions. Construction works started in January 2014 and lasted for 21 months. Residents of Sobieszewo Island took part in the implementation of the project, choosing the form of the reservoir in an online vote. The reservoir was built as part of the Gdańsk water and sewage project, stage II – a project co-financed in over 59% by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund under the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Program. Thanks to the construction of the water supply and reservoir, residents of the Island can be supplied with healthy, drinking water from deep water intakes. Problems with water pressure resulting from the specific location of the district were also eliminated.

The purpose of the barrage is to enable navigation on the Martwa Wisła River (from the Vistula River to Gdańsk) and to protect the areas located on the Martwa Wisła River (Żuławy Gdańskie) against the great waters of the Vistula River.
Reserves on the Island – Bird Watching
Bird watching is a great way to relax and unwind in the bosom of nature. There are two bird reserves on Sobieszewska Island: “Ptasi Raj” and “Mewia Łacha”. Special observation towers for bird watching have been built in the “Ptasi Raj” (Birds’ Paradise) reserve. You can meet over 200 species of birds here, including: Aquarius, crane, loner, woodcock, common tern and many others. The “Mewia Łacha” reserve protects the breeding sites of terns and the feeding and resting habitats of waders. The greatest threat to breeding birds are tourists.
